It's hard to miss smoke trails 50' tall and a football field long.

February 6, 2009

Winter
Winds from the S at 5-10mph. Temperature 40 degrees.
Burn duration: Appx. 45 minutes. One of at least 5 during daylight hours that day.

We were told by the city that in response to our ongoing complaint, on several field inspections (drive-by's) by various staff, "a conventional amount of smoke and the smell of wood burning similar to what a chimney would produce, were witnessed."

This video was taken while standing on 201st Avenue NW in Oak Grove, looking south toward the smoke. City Hall propert is 3 blocks East. The distance to the smoke source is approximately 800 feet away, and visible for about the length of a football field and longer. The smoke is visible at a glance even while driving by at 40mph.

However, looking at smoke doesn't cause health problems. Breathing it in does. And although you may not always SEE the smoke beyond a hundred yards, the smell is obvious for 3 times that far away. And according to studies, when you smell smoke, you're inhaling chemicals into your nasal passages and lungs. With this particular type of device, the volume of smoke is appx. 25 times larger than an indoor wood stove. The particles are small enough to embed in your lungs instead of passing through and back out as air normally does. This can cause, among other things, cancer. We're not scientists; however we can read and understand what scientists say, what the EPA says, what the MPCA says, and what countless other studies say about this subject. It's not a secret, and it's not fuzzy science. It's a reality-- a reality we live next to every day.
